Iced tea – the perfect refreshment for summer

Iced tea is the on-trend drink of the summer, and that's why we're celebrating Ice Tea Day on 10 June! Whether at a garden party with friends or family, on the go on a hot summer's day or as a refreshment after sport – a cold iced tea is always just the thing.

Traditionally made from black tea with a dash of lemon and, of course, ice, it is now available in a variety of flavors. Iced tea tastes best when freshly brewed. Sit back and enjoy the hot months.

Where does iced tea come from?

The idea of drinking cooled tea arose as early as the middle of the 19th century, when cooling techniques for tea were carried out. In 1904, the Englishman Richard Blechynden brought Indian black tea to the World's Fair in St. Louis/Missouri in order to publicize it. However, due to the hot weather, hot tea met little enthusiasm. But the British man came up with the idea of cooling the tea down quickly using chilled lead pipes – and so iced tea was born.

Is iced tea unhealthy?

Iced tea is not unhealthy per se. If you prepare it yourself, you decide what goes into it and can make your iced tea without sugar or artificial flavorings. However, the soft drink you can buy in the supermarket is usually industrially produced, so it's always worth taking a look at the ingredients list.

Does iced tea contain caffeine?

If you prepare your iced tea with black or green tea, it will contain caffeine. However, if you use a caffeine-free fruit or herbal tea for the preparation, you can enjoy your tea in the evening without any concerns – also perfect for children.
