Bitter orange is a cross between mandarin orange and grapefruit and belongs to the family of citrus plants. Like grapefruit and pomelo, it can thus be called a hybrid.

Its history begins in India, from where the bitter orange quickly conquered the Orient and after further stops along the way that included North Africa, reached Spain in the 11th century. In the 16th century, bitter orange then developed into a popular ornamental plant of the aristocratic society of Europe. At the time, this exotic plant was particularly hard to obtain and difficult to grow in foreign climates. Therefore, having a bitter orange tree in your garden symbolised power and prosperity.
